African American Voices explores the history of African-American and Black performers, musicians, and composers in the United States, beginning with Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, America’s first international Black star. The exhibit examines the indelible influence Black artists have had on American music and its global popularity. From the origins of Blues and Jazz to the classical compositions of Florence Price, African American Voices discusses the historical challenges faced by Black artists in America since the nation’s founding.

African American Voices is supported in part by a generous gift from Dr. Livingston and Mrs. Evelyn Alexander.
